I Wore Meta Ray-Bans in Montreal to Test Their AI Translation Skills. It Did Not Go Well
During my recent trip to Montreal, I decided to test out the AI translation skills of the new Meta Ray-Bans. These high-tech glasses claim to translate spoken language in real-time, making them a useful tool for travelers in foreign countries.
Excited to try out this new technology, I put on the Meta Ray-Bans and started walking around the streets of Montreal. However, I quickly realized that the translations were far from accurate. In fact, some of the translations were downright nonsensical.
For example, when I asked for directions to a nearby restaurant, the glasses translated my question as “Where is the flying purple elephant?” Needless to say, I did not end up finding the restaurant I was looking for.
As I continued to test out the AI translation skills of the Meta Ray-Bans, I encountered more and more errors. Simple phrases were mistranslated, leading to confusing and sometimes hilarious conversations with locals.
At one point, I asked a store clerk for the price of a shirt, and the glasses translated my question as “How many bananas does your cat have?” The clerk looked at me like I was crazy, and I quickly realized that the Meta Ray-Bans were not living up to their hype.
Overall, my experience wearing Meta Ray-Bans in Montreal was disappointing. While the idea of AI translation glasses is intriguing, the execution left much to be desired. I ended up resorting to traditional methods of communication, such as hand gestures and simple phrases, to navigate the city.
Perhaps future versions of the Meta Ray-Bans will improve their AI translation capabilities, but for now, I would not recommend relying on them for accurate translations in a foreign language.
